Daal (red split lentils)

ree

This recipe is so flavourful, I can't get enough of it! I've never really eaten lentils until my sister-in-law made this for us, and now we eat it at least once a week!

Lentils are a good source of fibre, folate, and potassium which is great for heart health, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

Ingredients:

- 1 cup daal (red split lentils)

- 3 cups water

- 1 1/2 teaspoon salt

- 1 teaspoon red chili powder

- 1 teaspoon coriander powder

- 1 teaspoon cumin powder

- 1 teaspoon garam masala

- 1 tablespoon oil

- 2 cloves of garlic sliced

Instructions:

  1. Combine the daal, water, salt, red chili powder, coriander, cumin, and garam masala into a large pot. Let it cook on medium heat for 40 mins. Make sure you mix it every 10 minutes so nothing gets stuck to the bottom of the pot. If you notice that the daal is getting thicker then add some more water to thin out and continue cooking.

  2. Once the daal is cooked and soft, take another small frying pan and heat 1 tablespoon of oil. Add the sliced garlic. Fry the garlic for 2-3 minutes (or until fragrant and browned).

  3. Add the oil and garlic to the pot of daal. Combine and cook for 5 more minutes.

  4. Serve with a side salad and some rice or naan.
